EXAM PREPARATION

Mathematics examinations require students to display a combination of knowledge, understanding and application. As the syllabus in public examinations has become more rigorous, the combined application of all three elements becomes critical to students who wish to achieve the highest grades possible.

My approach to exam preparation is to work through past papers and questions at the individual student’s level which cover the range of topics in the examination syllabus.  As confidence grows we will progress to higher level questions.

Through this process we will:

  • Identify and plug any gaps in knowledge

  • Create a solid understanding of each topic

  • Develop a range of problem solving methods and techniques. This will involve identifying what problem the question is asking you to solve, recognising what knowledge you have, converting words into a mathematical framework, trying out different methods.

  • This is often the area of mathematics that students find most challenging. By providing them with a toolkit of approaches their confidence at applying mathematics to real situations will grow and their examination grades will reflect this.

As examinations loom it is crucial that students get quick feedback on any revision questions they encounter that they are struggling with. Sessions will be flexible so they can bring questions along with them or I will be available on line to provide them with additional support should they prefer.
